Realising we had a week to do a MTB Trail somewhere at the top of Te Waipounamu we took Lewis Pass across to Kumara so as to set ourselves up for the Wilderness Trail. Lewis Pass is the northernmost pass in the South Island and although not crossing the mountainous area of The Southern Alps it does offer stunning river and native bush scenery. We dropped into Greymouth, on a particularly stunning clear blue-sky day (so unusual for the West Coast), for supplies and then headed inland to Kumara. The free park-over site did not look secure so we booked in for 3 nights at the bush camp of Greenstone retreat.
