A day of showers, so we headed out to Lake Coleridge for a look. The clouds parted, showing the stunning beauty of the lake. The last time we were here a northerly wind was blowing a gale creating whitecaps on the lake and waves breaking high over the concrete power station inlet. Today the wind was light and the air humid with rain. Water runs down a 200-meter-high embankment through huge pipes to the turbines in the power station outside of the village of Coleridge. Information boards describe the building of the embankment and the power station back in the 1950s. Quite an impressive piece of engineering. After lunch in the van, I unloaded my bike and set off into showers for the ride back to Mt Hutt Lodge. Even though I was rained on, it was warm rain and the scenery along the valley more than made up for any slight discomfort. I had driven the steep road coming out of Rakaia Gorge several times and always had a desire to ride it. And so it was that I got to knock that dexire off and then some. The downhill to the gorge bridge of breathtaking when the brakes are not used!
